Fort St. John

Fort St. John sits in the Peace River Country of northeastern British Columbia, a resource town built on oil, gas, and agriculture, with long, hard winters that can drop below minus thirty and summers that stretch late into the evening. It's a working-class city with a transient energy-sector population, which means rental costs can spike unpredictably alongside job cycles. Average household income here has hovered around 108,000 dollars annually in recent years, reflecting industry wages, but that figure masks real gaps for those outside the boom. The 2021 Homeless Count for Fort St. John identified 46 individuals experiencing homelessness on the night of the count, though local outreach workers believe the true number is higher given how many sleep in vehicles or move between camps along the Alaska Highway corridor. The Salvation Army Fort St. John operates a shelter and provides meals and clothing, Fort St. John Women's Resource Society offers support for those fleeing violence or in crisis, and the Fort St. John Friendship Society provides services geared toward Indigenous community members and anyone needing a hand up. Winters here are unforgiving, so layering matters and knowing where warm spaces are open can make the difference in a bad week. You are not invisible here, and there are people in this town who want to see you make it through.
