Greater Sudbury is a former mining city carved out of rock and lakes in Northeastern Ontario, big enough to have real services but small enough that people still notice each other. Average household income here sits around 90,000 dollars a year, though that number hides a lot of struggle on the ground. The city's 2018 point-in-time count identified 200 people experiencing homelessness, and local outreach workers say the real number living rough or precariously housed has grown since then. The Elgin Street Mission offers meals and a warm place to sit when the weather turns hard, and the Off the Street Shelter provides emergency beds for those with nowhere else to go. The Samaritan Centre also runs a soup kitchen and clothing support for people trying to get through the week. Winters here are brutal and long, so know where the warming centres are before the cold sets in, not after. You're not invisible here, and there are people in this city who will treat you like you matter — because you do.
