Lilongwe is Malawi's capital, a spread-out city split between the old town's markets and the newer administrative area, where government buildings sit close to informal settlements like Area 25 and Mtandire. Life here moves at a mix of rural and urban rhythms; maize and beans are staples, and much of the city runs on informal trade. The average Malawian household earns roughly 150,000 to 250,000 kwacha a month (around $90-150 USD), though many families in Lilongwe's poorer areas live on far less. Malawi doesn't publish precise national homeless counts, but a 2019 UN-Habitat assessment estimated that over 60% of Lilongwe's population lives in informal or inadequate housing, meaning tens of thousands lack secure shelter even if they aren't visibly on the street. Organizations like the Malawi Red Cross Society, Youth Watch Society, and the Salvation Army in Lilongwe have histories of providing food, shelter referrals, and emergency assistance to people in need, though resources stretch thin and availability shifts with funding. Churches and mosques across the city, particularly around Area 2 and Old Town, also sometimes offer a meal or a place to sit that isn't asking anything of you. If you're reading this because things are hard right now, know that surviving today, however you manage it, is enough - you don't have to have it all figured out to deserve help.
