North Hollywood

Street Survival Guide

Country:United StatesRegion:California

North Hollywood, often called NoHo, sits in the San Fernando Valley portion of Los Angeles, known for its arts district, subway and busway connections, and a mix of apartments, studios, and small businesses that draw both workers and artists to the area. It's not a separate city but a neighborhood within LA, so city and county services apply here just as they do downtown. Household income in Los Angeles averages around $76,000 a year citywide, though NoHo itself runs lower, with pockets of real poverty near the transit corridors. The most recent county-wide count, from the 2023 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count, found over 75,000 people experiencing homelessness across Los Angeles County, with thousands specifically located throughout the San Fernando Valley region that includes North Hollywood. LA Family Housing, headquartered right in North Hollywood, is one of the most active organizations here, offering shelter, housing navigation, and case management. The North Hollywood location of the Salvation Army also provides meals and emergency assistance, and PATH (People Assisting the Homeless) works throughout the Valley connecting people to housing and services. If you're out here, know that the NoHo Recreation Center and nearby libraries offer safe places to sit, charge a phone, and rest during the day. You're not invisible here, and there are people in this neighborhood whose whole job is to help you get through today and toward something steadier tomorrow.
