Nakuru

Street Survival Guide

Country:KenyaPopulation:570,674Region:Nakuru CountyCoordinates:-0.3072, 36.0722

Nakuru sits in the Rift Valley, a bustling agricultural and tourism hub known for its flamingo-dotted lake and its role as a major trading center for the county, with matatus, markets, and small businesses shaping daily life. Average household incomes here hover around 15,000 to 20,000 Kenyan shillings a month for many working families, though plenty scrape by on far less, and that gap is part of why survival on the streets is a daily reality for so many. A 2019 county assessment counted over 1,200 people experiencing homelessness in Nakuru town alone, a number that's almost certainly grown since. The Catholic Diocese of Nakuru runs outreach and shelter programs that have helped street families for years, and the Nakuru County Government has, at times, partnered with local churches to run cold-season night shelters downtown. St. Anne's Child Rescue Centre and similar faith-based missions also work with street children and destitute families, offering food and temporary refuge when they can. None of these resources are perfect or always available, but they're real, and worth checking on if you're near town. You are not invisible here, and you are not alone — people in this city do see you, even when the world outside makes that hard to believe.
