Norman is a college town about twenty minutes south of Oklahoma City, home to the University of Oklahoma and a mix of student energy, working-class neighborhoods, and a downtown arts scene along Main Street. It's a place that likes to think of itself as friendly, though like most cities its growth has outpaced affordable housing, and the average household income sits around $70,000 a year, which can make the gap feel wide if you're not sharing in it. Cleveland County's Point-in-Time count identified roughly 180 people experiencing homelessness in 2023, though outreach workers will tell you the real number moving through shelters, cars, and camps is higher than any single night can capture. Food and Shelter for Friends has long been a starting point here, offering meals, a shelter, and case management, while Thunderbird Clinic provides low-cost medical care for people without insurance. The Norman Community Action Team, or NCAT, also does street outreach and can help connect you to services if you're new to town or unsure where to turn. Main Street's shops and OU's campus buildings can offer warmth and a place to sit during the day, and the public library downtown doesn't ask questions before letting you stay. However you ended up here, you're not invisible, and there are people in this town whose whole job is to make sure you make it to tomorrow.
