Raleigh is a fast-growing capital city, part of the Research Triangle, with a mix of government offices, universities, and tech money that has pushed the average household income above $90,000 in recent years — but that prosperity sits right alongside real struggle. Wake County's most recent point-in-time count found around 700 people experiencing homelessness in a single night in 2023, and the number has been trending upward as rents climb faster than wages. The city has a genuine warmth to it, tree-lined and walkable in the older neighborhoods, but downtown's growth has also meant more policing of public spaces where people used to be able to rest. Oak City Cares operates as a central hub for connecting people to shelter, food, and medical services, and it's often the first stop worth making. Raleigh Rescue Mission provides shelter and meals, and Wake County Human Services can help with longer-term case management if you're ready to work through paperwork. The South Wilmington Street Center is another shelter option, particularly for men. Whatever brought you here, you deserve rest, a meal, and someone treating you like a person — hold onto that, and don't be afraid to ask twice if the first answer you get isn't enough.
