Richmond is a river city with old brick rowhouses, a deep Civil War and civil rights history, and a downtown that mixes state government buildings with a growing food and arts scene, so you'll find pockets of real wealth next to areas that have been struggling for decades. The average household income in the metro area runs around $85,000, but that number hides a lot of hardship in the East End, Southside, and parts of Church Hill. Richmond and the surrounding region counted roughly 500 people experiencing homelessness on a single night in the 2023 Point-in-Time count, a number advocates say undercounts the reality of people doubled up or sleeping in cars. Homeward is the local group that coordinates much of the region's response and can point you toward shelter beds and services. CARITAS runs a shelter and recovery programs, and Commonwealth Catholic Charities offers case management, food assistance, and help with IDs and paperwork, which matter more than people realize when you're trying to get back on your feet. The Daily Planet Health Services clinic can see you regardless of ability to pay, which is worth knowing if you're dealing with a health issue you've been putting off. Richmond's summers get brutally humid and winters can drop below freezing with real cold snaps, so layer up and ask around about warming and cooling stations when the weather turns extreme. You're not invisible here, and there are people in this city whose whole job is to help you find solid ground again — it's okay to ask.
