Saguenay

Saguenay is a mid-sized city carved into the hills along the Saguenay River, a place shaped by its paper mills and aluminum smelters, where winters cut deep and the community tends to look out for its own. Average household income here runs around 70,000 dollars a year, but that number hides plenty of people barely scraping by, especially with rents tightening in Chicoutimi and Jonquière. The last point-in-time count in 2022 identified 76 people experiencing homelessness across Saguenay, a figure local workers say is likely an undercount given how many stay hidden in cars, with friends, or on the move between boroughs. Le Séjour offers shelter and a warm meal along with a place to just sit down without being asked to leave. Le Grand Chemin works with those struggling alongside addiction, and La Maison des Sans-Abri has long been a name people mention when they need a bed for the night or someone to talk to who won't judge. Centraide du Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean also funds a number of smaller local efforts, so asking around at any of these places can point you toward others. The cold here is real and it does not wait for anyone, so please, take care of yourself tonight, and know that asking for help is not a weakness, it is how people survive this place together.
