Wellington

Wellington is a compact, windswept capital built on hills around a stunning harbour, known for its creative energy, strong coffee culture, and a climate that can turn from sunshine to sideways rain in an hour. It's a city that prides itself on being walkable and community-minded, though the cost of living has climbed sharply, with average household incomes in the region sitting around NZ$115,000 as of recent Stats NZ figures, while rents remain among the highest in the country. A 2023 point-in-time count identified over 140 people sleeping rough on any given night across the Wellington region, though outreach workers say the real number living in cars, garages, or couch-surfing is much higher. The Downtown Community Ministry has long been a trusted first stop for food, showers, and connection to services, while DCM also helps people navigate the benefit system and housing applications. The Wellington City Mission provides food parcels, budgeting advice, and emergency support, and Vincentian services through the Society of St Vincent de Paul can help with clothing and small material needs. Wellington's hills mean shelter from wind is easier to find on the leeward side of buildings, and locals are generally used to seeing people sleeping rough near the waterfront and Cuba Street, so you're not likely to be moved on aggressively. Whatever brought you here, you deserve warmth, food, and a bit of peace tonight — take it one hour at a time, and let someone at these places know your name.
