Zaria is one of northern Nigeria's oldest walled cities, built on trade, leatherwork, and centuries of Islamic scholarship, and it still carries that quiet, dignified pace, especially around the old city gates and the sprawling Ahmadu Bello University campus. Money is tight for most families here — average household incomes are commonly estimated between ₦40,000 and ₦60,000 a month, far short of what covers rent, food, and basic health care. In 2020, Kaduna State's own government reported more than 1 million almajirai statewide — the young Quranic students who often sleep rough, beg, and go without steady meals — and a large share of them are concentrated in Zaria's old city and university district. Jama'atu Nasril Islam and local FOMWAN (Federation of Muslim Women's Associations in Nigeria) chapters run zakat- and sadaqa-based feeding and clothing support through mosques and community centers, and the Nigerian Red Cross Kaduna State chapter sometimes runs outreach you can ask about through market traders or mosque elders. Fridays and Ramadan are the easiest times to find free food, since sharing what little one has is simply part of daily life here, not charity in the distant sense. Stay near the central market or the old city walls, where there's enough foot traffic that people notice you, and lean on known Islamic charity points rather than isolated corners after dark. You are not invisible in this city, and asking for help here is not shameful — someone has stood where you're standing now, and will share what they can.
